Ice Fishing 101: Tip-Ups, Safety, and Your First Hole

Hard-water season is here, and tip-ups are still the simplest way to cover water while you jig another hole. This primer covers gear, safety, and a sane first-trip plan.

Safety First

• Never trust early ice — check local reports and carry spikes.
• Go with a buddy; tell someone your lake and return time.
• Wear layers, waterproof boots, and clear eye protection when drilling.

Tip-Up Basics

• Set live bait (minnows, waxies) just above or within bottom weeds.
• Spread flags to pattern flats, breaks, and weed edges.
• When a flag flies, approach quietly; hand-line or reel fast on light hitters.

Your First Hole

Start shallow near known weed beds, then move deeper if action is slow. Match your target: panfish in 6–15 ft, pike or walleye on breaks.
